Lia Ices is a singer from the Hudson Valley, upstate New York, signed to super hip indie label Jajaguwar for this her second album. She has been in theatre school, studied piano, Shakespeare, dance and seems to have been given an arty upbringing by very cool parents – lucky girl. Her album features Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon on the string and acoustic second track Daphne. The opener, Love Is Won was used on a popular TV show (Girls) ending credits. Where do these people come from, talented and interesting natural creators who can put a hand to anything?Compared to Feist and Cat Power as well as Kate Bush and Tori Amos, she is none of these to me, in fact the comparisons are way off the mark. The reviews don’t seem to get the whole picture either and it must be painful for her to have a stranger tell her what’s wrong with her music when it’s the music’s depth that alludes them. You decide by listening to her album. The title track cleverly incoprorates clapping, bass, acoustic and strings. Strings again on Ice Wine and these intriguing lyrics:
The bones they are trees not our enemies
When they wave in the wind and grind their brittle teeth
And I collect their skin
Yes I need their bark
For my new kind of hide in my new kind of dark
An exceedingly creative and interesting record that gets better the more you hear it.
I have also added her 2012, 7 inch single at the bottom of this post. These two tracks are a very interesting take on Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here and Syd Barrett’s Late Night from The Madcap Laughs album.
