The Patti Smith Group in 1976 with a whole new vision of Rock and Roll strangely only almost using an old Van Morrison song (Gloria) and a folk song (Hey Joe) written by Billy Roberts and made famous by The Leaves, Tim Rose and Jimi Hendrix as a vehicle for her poetry. Both these songs have been covered many times and Patti Smith wrote such strong lyrics on her own and great songs with her band, but that sixties essence held fast in her debut even if she doesn’t actually sing G.L.O.R.I.A. here. Still, the traditions of rock music run deep and as Horses the debut album was recorded at Electric Ladyland studios in New York City, the ghost of Jimi Hendrix and the sixties at least, came into her consciousness. This of course was the beginning of her legendary albums, her break from music, her return and her artistic and poetic contribution up to the present day.
