7/12/13 – David Bowie – Starman – Top Of The Pops – 1972

Video Of The Day

David Bowie, Mick Ronson TOTP 72

Starman was Bowie’s first UK hit single since Space Oddity made Number 5 in 1969. Reaching Number 10 in 1972, this Top Of The Pops performance included Robin Lumley, perhaps better known to Jazz Rock aficionados as the keyboard player from Brand X. Trevor Bolder’s sideburns almost stole the show but the real question is, whose clothes were more outrageous, the band’s or the audience’s?

I must have seen this clip so many times over the years, a precious moment in history methinks….Bowie’s finest, most cutting edge & relevant work was produced in the 70s and I believe this song is one outstanding example….and such a colourful TV performance which ties it forever with the early 70s.
