Life & Death

Spanish legend Paco de Lucía suffered a heartattack and died on Tuesday whilst on holiday in Mexico with his family. A genius of the Flamenco style and responsible for infusing the genre with unbridled passion, incredible technique and a modern approach that kept the spirit of the tradition, he is a great loss to the art of guitar – arguably one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived.

Paco de Lucía  (21 December 1947 – 25 February 2014) RIP.

One of those guitar players who never were in one of those Rolling Stone’s “100 best” polls, but who cares. A great great loss. He was too young. One interesting issue about Paco de Lucia is that when he was 44, being a guitar master, he had no notion of musical theory. He had to learn very fast in order to perform the “Concierto de Aranjuez”. A pity I never saw him live.

    Rest in peace, master.

The beauty of flamenco is taught precision held in intense passion, with flares of improvisation. Fortunate, and you’ll experience the duende. Paco de Lucia was a grand master. Lightning fast guitar and still, you can hear every note. As Jimmy Page described his goal with music, Paco’s has “light and shade”.

Check out the album Siroco. Songs La Barrosa and La Canada are personal favorites.
