It’s hard to imagine that this wonderful clip could generate anything but joy. A Top 20 hit from Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s debut duets album United released in 1967, this was a partnership made in heaven.
The story is that they were like brother and sister, he was shy, she was outgoing and their musical collaboration was a huge success – they followed up the United album with You’re All I Need in 1968. (Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson wrote and produced all of their hits bar one). A third album Easy was released in 1969 but tragedy had already struck with Terrell collapsing on stage in Gaye’s arms at a show in Virginia in 1968. Terrell was diagnosed with a brain tumour and although she had multiple operations she died on March 16th 1970 at the age of 24. Gaye was inconsolable and it is suggested that this event led to his slide into drug abuse and certainly depression. How could something so beautiful end so badly?
