It’s Sunday – and I always loved this song – music, melody and lyrics. Although there may have been other musicians on the records, other songwriters, I still see The Monkees as one of the great underrated bands despite their commercial success. The song written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King boasts a great vocal from Mickey Dolenz and does in fact feature Mike Nesmith on guitar, Peter Tork on keyboards and Davey Jones on maracas and backing vocals. “Fast”Eddie Hoh played the drums and producer Chip Douglas played the bass.
The song, a fast paced and relentless, driving sixties classic reached No.3 on the US and No. 11 on the UK charts in 1967. The song also appeared on the Monkees’ fourth album Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones Ltd. In a time when records were being released in both mono and stereo versions, the stereo album features a different version to the single.
Enjoy the Greatest Hits album!
