Here’s a sonic and visual Rock gem of hats, hair and heavy tunes – Deep Purple Mk2 contributing massively to inventing a genre on German TV. Ritchie Blackmore’s dazzling skill and tone, Jon Lord looking like a busy chef creating an exquisite dish, a rhythm section of Ian Paice and Roger Glover joined at the hip and something in Ian Gillan’s voice that made him one of the most distinctive of rock vocalists.
This song is actually from the 1971 album Fireball, apparently performed here for Beat Club in 1970. The Fireball album was recorded from September 1970 to June 1971 so perhaps this was rehearsed and ready to go before they went in to the studio?
Sadly Jon Lord died in 2012, Ritchie Blackmore has embarked on a journey with American vocalist Candice Night playing Renaissance music as Blackmore’s Night and Paice, Glover and Gillan are taking Deep Purple around the world with Steve Morse playing lead guitar and Don Airey on keyboards playing the classics.
