First single from Dan Wilson’s second solo album Love Without Fear, released in the spring. Wilson was the frontman for Minneapolis band Semisonic and has always been an able and meaningful songwriter having substantial success with that band. You may also remember the controversial Not Ready To Make Nice by Dixie Chicks, he co-wrote that powerful song with persecuted Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines and her band mates Martie Maguire and Emily Robison in the wake of Maines’ negative comment about George Bush at a London concert.
Like Neil Finn it’s difficult to determine what makes him a sensitive and talented craftsman, in the seventies we used to call it ‘a certain je ne sais quoi’ (unpretentiously) whatever it is, he can captivate you with a simple line or an easy tune and an unquestionable sincerity in perhaps the same way Don McLean and a host of other seventies songwriters might have done. Apparently the female voice is Sara Bareilles – but that’s for another day.
