Written by Andy Partridge and originally the B side of Grass from Skylarking released in 1986, Dear God was hastily added to the US album (replacing Mermaid Smile) as a result of the unprecedented attention it was receiving due to its lyrical content. Its controversial message hit a nerve across America where belief is woven deeply into the fabric of society, much more than in Northern Europe. It wasn’t a hit but it provoked debate and presented an argument and that alone gave it great value and in turn made people more aware of the band.
