Once you have started listening to Todd Rundgren, it ‘s hard to move on to Something/Anything else, so I thought another one of his most popular songs wouldn’t go amiss. Can We Still Be Friends is the second track on his 1978 album Hermit Of Mink Hollow and became a hit in the US reaching No. 29 on the Billboard chart. The song was also recorded by Robert Palmer, Rod Stewart, Colin Blunstone amongst others.
The song succeeds in the tricky skill of writing a meaningful relationship song, short on cliches and heavy with truths, it touched the heart and ended squabbles in under four minutes. Rundgren’s emotional voice gave authenticity to his songwriting leaving you moved by the sentiment and astonished at his many skills – I guess he didn’t get involved in the videos.
