Perhaps this was Todd Rundgren showing off? Showing the world that he knew how they did it sonically in the sixties, showing us that he could do it too. He released his album Faithful in 1976, it was comprised on one side of original songs and on the other side ‘faithful’ sixties covers:
Happenings Ten Years Time Ago – The Yardbirds
Good Vibrations – The Beach Boys
Rain – The Beatles
Most Likely You Go Your Way And I’ll Go Mine – Bob Dylan
If Six Was Nine – Jimi Hendrix
Strawberry Fields Forever – The Beatles
Interestingly the B-side of The Yardbirds, Happenings Ten Years Time Ago was, The Nazz Are Blue and was allegedly where Rundgren got the name of his sixties band.
Included here is the sublime Beach Boys original version starring: Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love and Bruce Johnston (no Brian in the video). Good Vibrations was written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love. In the video, Mike Love is playing an Electro-Theremin – and yes, I’d love to own one! There are copious notes on the song in the link below.

I’m not sure if the photo really is from 1976 but it was apparently the centrefold for Creem magazine in the mid-seventies – it simply had to be posted!
