21/1/15 – Current 93 – When The May Rain Comes – 1992

Song Of The Day

David TibetFrom the early eighties till now Current 93 have been releasing their experimental, mystical folk albums to a core audience. The band is the artistic vehicle of David Tibet with regular contributors Stephen Stapleton from Nurse With Wound, Michael Cashmore from Nature And Organisation, Douglas P. from Death In June and Steve Ignorant from Crass, credited as Steve Intelligent. (Although none of them appear on the latest album). Others such as Nick Cave, Björk, Andrew W.K., Rose McDowall from Strawberry Switchblade and Will Oldham have also collaborated.

It’s deep, scary, brainy, dark music, literary, studied, religious like a pagan Folk imagined by one of the disciples had he had a tape recorder in the days of Jesus. A taste for Aliester Crowley and the occult, one imagines that Tibet has spent a life researching his interests and expressing them as art through his band.

When The May Rain Comes appears on the 1992 album Thunder Perfect Mind and a live version on All Dolled Up Like Christ from the same year. His latest album, I Am The Last Of All The Field That Fell (A Channel) follows his poetic journey of vivid imagery and macabre storytelling.

On, I Am The Last Of All The Field That Fell (A Channel) the track Mourned Winter Then features Antony Hegarty, I Could Not Shift The Shadow features Nick Cave. Tony McPhee guitarist from progressive blues band Groundhogs also appears along with John Zorn on saxophone.
