Song Of The Day

The Only Ones B:W PicAny excuse to post something about The Only Ones, this song is about Peter Perret’s missing cat. Who knew? Well at some point, this piece of information came my way and it always made for a light moment in The Only Ones listening experience (not for the cat or Perret).

I’ve been thinking about songs that you thought were about one thing but were actually about another – or a song that meant more than when you first heard it when you found out what it was really all about. For example, Everything I Own by Bread seemed a hundred times more meaningful when I heard the song was about David Gates father.

In the meantime enjoy the wonder of The Only Ones. What is is it about them? Perret makes Lou Reed sound like Barry Manilow, the lyrics are emotionally penetrating, John Perry is a creative and talented guitar player, Alan Mair, bass player, well he’s the together one and having Ex Spooky Tooth drummer, Mike Kellie in the band makes for the oddest mix. You can read the review of the album that this song comes from, Even Serpents Shine, at the link below

Note: Out There In The Night was released on a blue vinyl 12 inch (that the Discography doesn’t list) along with their debut single, Lovers Of Today and its B-side, Peter And The Pets.

The Lyrics:

You left that morning
You gave me no warning
You were my best friend
Oh, I can’t live without you
There was something about you
I want you back again

Baby, sometimes I think of you
Out there in the night
All the comforts of home have been denied

People find it hard to understand
I never cried before
One thing’s for certain
There’s nothing around that
Could make me cry no more

Baby, sometimes I think of you
Out there in the night
All the comforts of home have been denied

Compared to all of them
You stand out
You give me pure unspoilt love
They’re all reaching and grabbing
All you did was give me
Love and love and love and love

Sometimes I think of you
Out there in the night
Roaming the empty streets
Looking for your life

Sometimes I think of you
Out there in the night
You ain’t here with me
And nothing seems right

Sometimes I think of you
Out there in the night
