I Should’ve Known was the first single from Aimee Mann’s first solo record since the demise of her previous band ‘Til Tuesday. The album, Whatever was released in 1993 and produced by Jon Brion, later of The Grays. It was full of catchy hooks, rich melodies and sharp lyrics all delivered with Mann’s unique vocal style. (Plus the track, Could’ve Been Anyone was co-written with Jules Shear and yours truly!
The momentum had slowed after the success of her first album with ‘Til Tuesday, Voices Carry, but later in the decade she would be part of the Magnolia soundtrack, a film inspired by Mann’s songs, one of which, Save Me was nominated for an Academy Award. The album also included Jon Brion, Nilsson and Supertramp – I guess you have to see the film to make sense of it.
Mann never disappoints as a live performer, a singer or songwriter, if you are new to her, there’s a whole lot to catch up on – start here, right, now.
