24/6/15 – The Rolling Stones – We Love You – 1967

Video Of The Day

Song Of The Day

Rolling Stones We Love You single cover 1967Recorded as part of the Satanic Majesties sessions in 1967, We Love You was a thank you to everyone that supported the Stones on their arrest earlier in the year. The song starts with the rattling of gaoler’s keys, ominous footsteps and the sound of a cell door slamming shut. The promo video directed by Peter Whitehead features Keith Richards as the judge and Marianne Faithfull with her famous fur with Jagger’s impudence shown as indisputable evidence of their decadence. (It’s supposed to be Oscar Wilde’s trial). Brian Jones is looking rather stoned in the studio footage in the clip.

We dont care if you only love, ‘We’
We dont care if you only love, ‘We’

We love you, we love you
We hope that you will love, ‘We’ too
We love, ‘They’, we love, ‘They’
We want you to love, ‘They’ too

We dont care if you hound, ‘We’
And love is all around, ‘We’
Love cant get our minds off
We love you, we love you

You will never win, ‘We’
Your uniforms dont fit, ‘We’
We forget the place were in
Cause we love you, we love you of course, we do

I love you, I love you
And I hope that you won’t prove wrong too
We love you, we do
We love you, we do

The song features John Lennon and Paul McCartney on backing vocals and Nicky Hopkins on the killer piano riff (Hopkins died at the age of 50 in 1994). Brian Jones plays the mellotron and Charlie Watts breaks out of his usual drumming patterns into something rather more psychedelic. George Chkiantz engineering on Andrew Loog Oldham’s last production for the band…Bill stays cool.

The song reached No.8 in the UK but only No.50 in the US where the single was flipped and Dandelion made No.14.
