In recent days it has become obvious that the record that Stones aficionados consider their worst is actually seen as their best by less fanatical fans. This is what happens when you break the mould – you upset the purists, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus had left behind their roots. In reality, Psychedelia comes from the same source, is it that different – so really, so much fuss?
When we have all died and these glory days of musical creativity are just a footnote in history, future generations will be intrigued by the details that determine 20th century values of good and bad, deep and shallow, contrived and sincere. What is clear from this record is that the quality of Jagger/Richards songwriting (mostly) continues and that a cosmetic change of style doesn’t really frustrate their ability as writers at all.
She’s A Rainbow is simply a Psychedelic Pop classic, reaching No. 25 in the US charts. It features Nicky Hopkins’ vibrant piano playing (again), Brian glued to the mellotron and John Paul Jones pre Led Zeppelin on string arrangements. What’s not to like? A few posts ago I was asking what would have happened if Aretha Franklin had gone Psychedelic – might have sounded something like this.
She comes in colours everywhere
She combs her hair
She’s like a rainbow
Coming, colours in the air
Oh, everywhere
She comes in colours
She comes in colours everywhere
She combs her hair
She’s like a rainbow
Coming, colours in the air
Oh, everywhere
She comes in colours
Have you seen her dressed in blue?
See the sky in front of you
And her face is like a sail
Speck of white so fair and pale
Have you seen a lady fairer?
She comes in colours everywhere
She combs her hair
She’s like a rainbow
Coming, colours in the air
Oh, everywhere
She comes in colours
Have you seen her all in gold?
Like a queen in days of old
She shoots colours all around
Like a sunset going down
Have you seen a lady fairer?
She comes in colours everywhere
She combs her hair
She’s like a rainbow
Coming, colours in the air
Oh, everywhere
She comes in colours
She’s like a rainbow
Coming, colours in the air
Oh, everywhere
She comes in colours
What is the connection between She Comes In Colors (US spelling) by Love and this?
