Released as a single after Oh Well, The Green Manalishi reached No.10 in the Uk charts in 1970. The title has perplexed and intrigued listeners since the song’s release and interpretations and explanations have described it as a reference to money, a type of LSD and a Japanese demon mask. The song is another Peter Green classic – he is remembered mostly for his guitar playing, but his songs were special and his voice perfectly suited these honest heartfelt outpourings about his own life.
I’ve also included the B-Side, World In Harmony an instrumental written by Green and Danny Kirwan. It makes you wonder what might have been if these two had survived the traumas of drugs and alcohol and collaborated into the seventies with and without the rest of the band – can you imagine a world without Rumours?
