Song Of The Day

Labelle PicIn celebration of the great Allen Toussaint as a producer and arranger, Labelle’s Lady Marmalade has endured as one of his greatest successes. It was written by composer Kenny Roberts and lyricist Bob Crewe as Crewe’s impressions of New Orleans and was originally released by Nolan’s group, The Eleventh Hour in 1974, but it was Labelle’s interpretation with Toussaint’s production and arrangement that fused Rock, Funk, Soul and Disco into one with a hard hitting catchy, sexually provocative masterpiece.

Labelle’s line up of songwriter Nona Hendryx, Sara Dash and Patti Labelle dressed in outrageous Glam, Spacewoman, Star Trek episode attire, made their debut on American TV’s Soul Train to an ecstatic response. The song reaching No.1 on the US charts in 1975 (No.17 in the UK). Crewe and Nolan famously became only the third act to dethrone a number one single with another one of their songs, Franki Valli’s My Eyes Adored You – Lennon and McCartney and Holland, Dozier, Holland were the other two songwriting teams to achieve this.

A massive hit in 2002 for Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink, and Lil’ Kim (and Missy Elliott) from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, it topped the US charts for 5 weeks in 2002. British quartet, All Saints also took the song to No.1 in the UK in 1999 as a mash up between it and Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s Under The Bridge. Patti Labelle swears to this day that she didn’t know it was about a prostitute.

In contrast to Allen Toussaint’s understated, self effacing personality, Lady Marmalade demonstrated his ability to take a back seat whilst understanding completely what it took to be in the driving seat – genius.

Hey sister, go sister, soul sister, go sister
Hey sister, go sister, soul sister, go sister

He met marmalade down in old new orleans
Struttin’ her stuff on the street
She said “hello,
Hey joe, you wanna give it a go?” mmm, mmm

Itchi gitchi ya ya da da
Itchi gitchi ya ya here
Mocha-choca-lata ya ya
Creole lady marmalade

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?

He sat in her boudoir while she freshened up
The boy drank all her magnolia-wine
On the black satin sheets oh I swear he started to freak

Itchi gitchi ya ya da da
Itchi gitchi ya ya here
Mocha-choca-lata ya ya
Creole lady marmalade

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?

Hey, hey, hey
Touching her skin feelin’ silky smooth
The colour of cafe au lait
Made the savage beast inside
Roar until it cried, more, more, more

Now he’s back home doing nine to five
Living his grey flannel life
But when he turns off to sleep
Old memories creep, more, more, more

Itchi gitchi ya ya da da da
Itchi gitchi ya ya here
Mocha-choco-lata ya ya
Creole lady marmalade

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?
Creole lady marmalade

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?

Itchi gitchi ya ya da da
Itchi gitchi ya ya here
Mocha-choco-lata ya ya
Itchi gitchi ya ya here
