15/4/16 – Blood Sweat And Tears – Without Her – 1968

Song Of The Day

Blood Sweat And Tears B:W 1968Blood Sweat And Tears always looked like a small crowd waiting for a speech. Who were all these people? What did they all do? How could you need that many band members?

The original line-up had eight members – Al Kooper, Jim Fielder, Fred Lipsius, Randy Brecker, Jerry Weiss, Dick Halligan, Steve Katz and Bobby Colomby. Al Kooper was the band leader having been in Blues Project as well as playing with Dylan and Hendrix – he allegedly insisted on having that role. They cleverly mixed brass, Rock, Pop, Soul, Jazz and Psychedelia and that saw them achieve huge success in the coming years metamorphosing into Jazz and Fusion as time passed. (That’s odd time of course). Al Kooper left after the first record for various reasons, to concentrate more on production and because the band wanted a real lead singer – Canadian (born in Surrey) David Clayton-Thomas was recommended by Judy Collins.

Blood Sweat And Tears - Child I Father To The Man - Cover Art - 1968Enjoy this track written by the wonderful Harry Nilsson and originally on his album Pandemonium Shadow Show (1967). It also appeared on Blood Sweat And Tears first album, you know, the one with the uncomfortable cover art – Child Is Father To The Man (1968).

As unbelievable as this may sound since their birth Blood Sweat And Tears have had 150 members, now that’s a crowd waiting for a speech.

I spend the night in a chair thinkin’
She’ll be there but she never comes
And I wake up and wipe the sleep from my eyes
And I rise to spend another day without her

It’s just no good anymore when you walk
Through the door of an empty room
You go inside and set a table for one, it’s no fun
When you have to spend the day without her

We burst the pretty balloon
Took us to the moon, such a beautiful thing
But it’s ended now and it sounds like a lie
If I said I’d rather die than be without her

Love is a beautiful thing when it knows how to swing
And it grooves like a clock but the hands on the clock
Tell the lovers to the part and it’s breakin’ my heart
To spend another day without her

I spend the night in a chair thinkin’
She’ll be there but she never comes
And I wake up and wipe the sleep from my eyes
And I rise to spend another day without her

Can’t go on without her
There’s no song without her
Can’t go on without her
