Song Of The Day

mose-allison-bwAs Jazz lovers struggle with Rock and vice versa, Mose Allison managed to stay out of the genre wars by inventing his own style that incorporated Jazz and Blues with real songs, virtuoso playing, meaningful lyrics, memorable melodies, humour, seriousness –  Allison had it all covered. When The Who released Live At Leeds they included Young Man’s Blues, a song from Allison’s debut album from 1957.

Mose Allison influenced Rock artists but not the fans of the bands he influenced. Which Clash fan looked at the small print to see who wrote Look Here on Sandinista? Perhaps his most famous song was Parchman Farm from his second album Local Color released in 1958. The song was adapted by Allison after Bukka White’s original idea in the forties. It was covered by Blue Cheer as Parchment Farm on their debut album Vincebus Eruptum in 1968. Cactus opened their debut album with it in 1970. It appeared on Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton in 1966, heavy on the harmonica from John Mayall. The wonderful I’m Smashed originally on Allison’s 1969 album Hello There, Universe was recorded by Leon Russell on his 1974 album Stop All That Jazz.

Most influential to Rock musicians and yet somehow only known by Jazz and Blues fanatics, there’s only about 40 albums to choose from to catch up. Below is the lyric to I Don’t Worry About A Thing, it should make you love him. RIP Mose, thanks for the words and thanks for the music and although you were four days into your 9oth year, wherever you are please tell them to stop letting the musicians leave.

If this life is driving you to drink
Sitting round wondering just what to think
Well I’ve got some consolation
I’ll give it to you if I might

You know, I don’t worry about a thing
‘Cuz I know nothing’s going to be alright

You know this world’s just one big trouble spot
‘Cuz some have plenty and some have not
You know, I used to be troubled
But I finally saw the light

Now I don’t worry about a thing
‘Cuz I know nothing’s going to be alright

Don’t waste your time trying to be a go getter
Things will get worse before they get any better
You know there’s always somebody
Playing with dynamite

But I don’t worry about a thing
‘Cuz I know nothing’s going to be alright
