Song Of The Day

elvis-presley-in-the-ghetto-single-cover-1969In 1969 Elvis Presley released, From Elvis in Memphis, the first studio album after a long series of Soundtrack albums.  His Paramount studio deal over, he was free to record again in his own right and chose to work at American Sound studios in Memphis with the house band, The Memphis Boys and their classic Country Soul sound.

In The Ghetto was Elvis Presley’s biggest hit for four years and his and most powerful and meaningful song for a long time, reaching No.3 in the USA. Elvis was back with a poignant message – the song written by Mac Davis was about the state of things for the hopeless youth living in the ghetto and heading for a life of crime.

The album, From Elvis In Memphis hit the No 1 spot in the UK, West Germany, Ireland, Norway, Australia and New Zealand in 1969, it reached No.13 in the US. The album sessions also spawned one of Presley’s greatest songs – Suspicious Minds, written by songwriter Mark James , it was a US No.1 single and cemented Presley’s comeback. Eight years later in 1977 he was dead at the age of 42.

Two Presley experiences have taken me to the Graceland mansion and the small Tupelo house where he grew up. Incredible to see where he came from and incredible to see where he ended his days. I remember the lounge room with all the TV’s and everything brown in the decor. The private plane and the mixed feeling of grandeur and tragedy. One quite astonishing fact, Presley was a twin whose brother was still born, the mind boggles.

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin’
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And his mama cries
‘Cause if there’s one thing that she don’t need
It’s another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

People, don’t you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he’ll grow to be an angry young man some day?

Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see
Do we simply turn our heads, and look the other way?

Well, the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

Then one night in desperation
A young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car
Tries to run, but he don’t get far

And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers ’round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)

And as her young man dies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin’
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto (in the ghetto)
And his mama cries (in the ghetto)
(In the ghetto)
