Originally recorded by Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers for inclusion on the 1981 album Hard Promises, it was left off as the lyric had a female perspective. Producer Jimmy Iovine had been working with The Heartbreakers and Nicks simultaneously and she became the perfect choice for the female voice. The song was written by Petty and guitarist Mike Campbell and appeared on Stevie Nicks’ first solo album Bella Donna released in the same year.
I love Mike Campbell’s restrained guitar playing as well as his impeccable tone. Stan Lynch’s drumming and those two unique voices. The song has such a wonderful mood, not always present in music that leans towards traditional songwriting. It always made me happy to know that there’s artists out there that are hugely popular that I actually like because there’s so many that I don’t.
Petty and The Heartbreakers will be playing at British Summer Time Hyde Park on the 9th July with Stevie Nicks as special guest. The Lumineers and The Head And The Heart are also on the bill.
