(You Gotta Walk) Don’t Look Back was originally recorded by The Temptations in 1965 as Don’t Look Back. It was written by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White, co-founder (and only original member) of The Miracles. With many cover versions, perhaps the most notable is Bobby Womack’s version from his 1970 album My Prescription. There’s also an a cappella version by The Persuasions, recorded live with lots of handclaps, harmonies and the help of Frank Zappa who released their debut album Acappella on Straight records in 1970.
The Reggae version, a duet by Peter Tosh and Mick Jagger, was a hit in 1978. Tosh went on to support The Stones on their 1978 US tour. The song appeared as the opening track on Tosh’s album Bush Doctor (1978). Keith Richards also appeared on the album on two tracks. The video is a joyous prance through Mick Jagger’s hips and lips with cool cat Tosh probably enjoying his antics.
Peter Tosh was murdered in a home invasion in Kingston, Jamaica in 1987 with guests being held hostage and Tosh being tortured with the assailants demanding money before he was shot and killed.
