Music today has been The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat, released on this day in 1968, 56 years ago. It was the first Velvets album I got into, marvelling over John Cale’s classic Welsh accent on The Gift and generally digging the pulse of the title track. Then there’s Lady Godiva’s Operation (topical), the short Here She Comes Now, more reminiscent of earlier songs, the razor-edged I Heard Her Call My Name and then finally the 17-minute Sister Ray. Engineer Gary Kellgren is quoted as saying, “I don’t have to listen to this. I’ll put it in Record, and then I’m leaving. When you’re done, come get me.” He died tragically, drowning with his girlfriend at the age of 38. His girlfriend Kristianne Gaines was just 34.
