15/2/24 – MARTY’S DAILY ALBUM PICKS

Music today has been The 5th Dimension and their third, almost psychedelic soul album, Stoned Soul Picnic (1968) named after the Laura Nyro song that they cover – with the lyric:

Can you surry, can you picnic, whoa?
Can you surry, can you picnic?
Come on, come on and surry down to a stoned soul picnic
Surry down to a stoned soul picnic
There’ll be lots of time and wine
Red yellow honey, sassafras and moonshine
Red yellow honey, sassafras and moonshine
Stoned soul, stoned soul, whoa

Up, Up and Away from their 1967 debut was written by Jimmy Webb and recorded by The Wrecking Crew for the vocal group that was The Fifth Dimension, it was a massive hit, No.1 in Australia and Canada, No.7 in the USA and winning six grannies – Mildred, Hilda, Agnes, Daphne, Agatha, and Dorothy.
