TO WHERE I AM NOW

The rain is back, but it’s not like I’m swanning around the streets sitting in cafés drinking vegetarian piña coladas. My first thought was to get out in the rain, go and have a look at the second-hand furniture store and see if they have any appropriate shelves. Shelf space, shelf space, shelf space is all I want. Having said that, I finally got on to sessioneer mixes today as I attempt to do all the other things I’m supposed to do but haven’t been able to. But I’m just constantly thinking about practical things, rather than creative things – for example, as soon as I can get that table moved to where the boxes are, and shelves where it was, I will feel like I’m getting somewhere because it won’t be a case of finding more shelves anymore because there will be no more places to put them – it’s hardly searching for poetic lines in the ether. Having said that, there will be a time when it’s done and that will be something.

At the furniture store, there were buckets everywhere as the rain came down and penetrated the leaky roof. It’s a really large space and they need a lot of buckets when it rains. Lots of buckets but no shelves – I thought everyone was selling their CDs and DVDs for streaming, so where are their shelves? Olivia left for the psupermarket, I went back to the mix listening. As I finished, Olivia arrived back with dinner, Indian for a change, as I started a sesh with Bob in Boston. Dinner over an almost half-decent Star Trek: Discovery (almost).

I got back into filing again and for every box in order (mainly) there’s a whole lot of loose mixed up records that take a lot of time to sort out and file away. Olivia was sorting out all the records that I’ve made in the library while I fought through the boxes in the hallway and the front. I’ve been dealing with the crooners – Sinatra, Andy Williams, Matt Monro, Nat King Cole and more. The ladies are in the same area – Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Eartha Kitt, Julie London, Pet Clark, Shirley Bassey. It’s kinda hard to know who to put where, Patti Smith isn’t with Shirley Bassey, so it’s sorta kinda, fifties/sixties singers together – torch singers, jazz singers (Ella) and pop singers from then. There are so many records that it just feels easier to find things in sections, otherwise it’s quite overwhelming and there are already shocks with metal bands next to singer-songwriters, but it’s pretty hard to break everything up into categories, also because sometimes single categories don’t work for some artists.

Music today was the debut album by The Sound, Jeopardy (1980), in memory of Adrian Borland who lost his life on this date in 1999. RIP.
