TO WHERE I AM NOW

Midnight, that must mean I should completely rewire the studio (or at least unplug it all) and change the whole room around, pretty much putting everything on the direct opposite wall to where it is now. Midnight for me is the time to get busy, it’s when I get most things done and I’ve been meaning to do this for a while. I need more width, so I needed to move the computer and table, mixing desk and effects rack to the guitar wall, so I’m not stuck in the corner with everything I need for recording quite difficult to access. Plus that’s where the door is, so that is obviously not a space you can cover. When are they going to invent equipment that hovers?

A few hours in and a few VOX AC 30s, Rickenbacker Transonics, Marshall, Roland, Orange and Peavey bass amps moved and my body is feeling it. The couch, the desks and a whole lot of bending down and getting into strange shapes under tables and the unused angle muscles are complaining. Still, I can see the future and Olivia has been helping with the heavier things, things that take two and now we are looking at speaker distances and symmetry. Throughout, the stereo has been working until I did what I knew I would, caught the speaker lead and it broke the plug that goes into the speaker, all I needed.

Suddenly the music was under threat. I managed to get the broken wire to hang precariously but still work, but then the other speaker was dropping out, I secured it in the amp, then Olivia did, and then I did again and it was still not working properly. I then remembered to make sure the balance was in the middle, that had to be it, but no. I then randomly touched the RCA lead from the CD player into the amp and it worked, must be that lead, but then I randomly touched the phono lead and then the tape lead and they all reacted the same way as if the whole top row of connections was unstable. It took me an hour to find it, so frustrating and I still don’t know why it’s happening. Still precarious, it’s working at the moment with David SylvianGone To Earth (1986). It’s been Porcupine Tree all night, Signify (1996), Stupid Dream (1999) and Lightbulb Sun (2000). I played Lightbulb Sun twice because of all the interruptions.

So Olivia has gone to sleepsville and I am looking at all the furniture and gear swapped around with none of it wired up and a pile of spaghetti in the middle of the floor. But at 6.12 and my cup of tea is nearly finished, that is going to have to be tomorrow’s task. It doesn’t seem possible that the mess can possibly find its spot somewhere in the room, but if it was there before, it should all fit again despite the change around, we’ll see. It seems more practical now at least and for those of you that experienced the guitar wall as the backdrop for the In Deep Fun Razor, the next live stream on Saturday, 26th October will be a different wall, and oh yeah, different songs. Night night.

Music today has been Porcupine TreeSignify, I felt like picking this one of the bunch because I feel the others (including Sylvian) get more attention from me and I’m not sure why, this one is just as good.
