TO WHERE I AM NOW

The agent who found the In Deep Music Archive premises for us (André) has these little get-togethers with all the people he’s found places for, a lot of retired Americans, others too, but we only spoke to the Americans today. One couple were actually young and had applied to live here. She and her partner were in IT, when the collection came up, she referred to records as physical media, haha. The older ones hadn’t heard of T. Rex, despite being older. I don’t think they brought records from America. It sounds like I’m giving them all a hard time, I’m really not. I took my collection from England to Australia, Australia to Sweden, Sweden to England and England to Portugal – call me old-fashioned.

We had to leave to come and meet Eric at The Archive. He sent a request to come and visit as he was here in Porto with his partner, checking out different cities in Europe. Ginny wasn’t well, but he came and we hung out for quite a while discussing music and the universe, he has a podcast called ‘The One You Feed’, if you’d like to check it out. I asked if he’d like to hear an album on the stereo and he suggested 16 Lovers Lane (1988) by The Go-Betweens and then he wanted to hear the last track (the title track) on Submarine Bells (1990) by The Chills, he knew his antipodean music.

Eric left and graciously left us a donation. We watched Poland lose at home to Portugal over dinner (1-3), Ronaldo scored his 906th professional goal whilst playing his 215th cap for his country. After the game-food, I went into the studio and wrote another song which I’ll attempt to do a more coherent demo of in the coming days, along with yesterday’s song and the day before’s idea.

Back in The Archive, Olivia and I finally slid some extension wires behind the shelves. Everything gets done – eventually. I put some more records away, found some dupes and cleaned a couple of records using the record cleaning machine. It really makes a difference and is essential for a collection like this, especially if you have a lot of secondhand records. Sometimes though the crackles persist and there seemed to be gremlins in between the tracks, inaudible when the songs were played. I listen to songs from the computer, CDs and vinyl, sometimes the vinyl is a relief from digital harshness and sometimes ‘digital media’, haha, is a relief from crackles and pops.

Music today has been 16 Lovers Lane (1988) by the Go-Betweens. I hope Grant and Martin are having a good sesh somewhere.
